route #5: Lake Powell, Arizona to Santa Fe, New Mexico

NEXT ROUTE

We hit the road a bit after dawn. The temperature was very high starting 9.00 AM and this route would be one of the longest – and hottest – of our trip. We followed AZ-98 E and US- 160 E to Indian Route 59 and the Navajo County. Vast empty landscape, red earth formations…

The closest campgrounds to the city were Hyde Memorial State Park and Black Canyon Campground. We chose randomly Hyde Memorial. The park is a short scenic drive from Santa Fe and offers excellent group facilities and campsites. At the park’s entrance the sign was warning “Gates close at 10.00 PM…

The air was fragrant with the smell of fresh green chile roasting away. “And whenever you have the option of both Green and Red Chile order “Christmas” and get a combo!”. Sweet Lily Bakery serves pastries – including green chile muffins – and good dark roasted coffee. We had breakfast and went next door to check out the small but beautiful collection in Georgia O’Keeffe Museum…
